As I was playing through Mario Galaxy 2 (I currently have 93 stars), I was getting this strange vibe about it, but I couldn’t quite say what it was. And then I read this article: “Galaxy 2 is the first proper 3D Mario Game.” Then I got it.

Mario Galaxy 2 feels like a classic 2D Mario game. You fly to one planetoid, do what you have to do, follow a very guided path, and then fly to the next planetoid. The game always keeps you moving in one direction. Also, you only go to a single Galaxy 2-4 times. This keeps the World Map moving on to new worlds quicker, like in a classic 2D mario game. So is that why Mario Galaxy 2 got all of these perfect 10.0 reviews? Because I was disappointed.

Mario 64 is my favorite game, because I like roaming around the open worlds, trying to figure out where to go next. I like solving puzzles for 3 of the stars in a world that all take place right in the same place. I like the idea that I can jump into a painting saying I’m going to get one star, and I jump out with a different star. Looking for all of the little secrets and 1up easter eggs is what I really like about Mario 64. Even Mario Sunshine followed this same pattern of gameplay. It got some not-as-good reviews, but at least it still has the puzzle-solving, mind-exploring, creativity-inducing levels that Mario 64 introduced. Even though I absolutely hate FLUDD, the gameplay itself was fun and intuitive.

The first Mario Galaxy seemed like a bit of a step down for me, but at the time I was too mesmerized by the gravity effects to really notice. There were 6 stars in every Galaxy still, but you would not go to the same places in the Galaxies to get the stars. You would start out on the same Planetoid, and then the Launch Star would take you to somewhere completely different. Also in this game, you pretty much just had one direction to travel in. But maybe the creators of the game didn’t make it so obvious, because I didn’t feel constricted in that way. And then the Prankster comets made me mad, because for every level, you were essentially doing two of the stars twice. Instead, they could have decided to add in more hidden stars with puzzles that you had to solve to get there. But, no. And can I add that there were practically no coins in this whole game?

So why does everyone like Mario Galaxy 2 so much? Because it feels to them like a classic 2D Mario game. I don’t like how that is. (And don’t tell me it’s because of my age, because I’ve bought plenty of 2D Mario games that have been released in my lifetime, and I like them.) Mario 64 introduced such a fun game idea, and then it was never really followed up with. It never got its sequel. (Well, there’s that Sunshine thing…) They very well could have made Mario Galaxy 2 much more open-ended than they did. Giving it that new Mario feel is what it needs. We don’t need another game to feel like a 2D side-scrolling Mario, because we got one of those in November (New Super Mario Bros. Wii)! I love playing this game, because it looks how it feels: 2D in all aspects.

So I’ve come to expect that we’re never going to get a sequel the jewel that was Mario 64. They’ve decided that this one-directional stuff is what people want. I just think it’s too darned easy, being told where to go all the time. Oh well. At least Super Mario Galaxy 2 has more coins.

PokéRetrospective A Tiny Look at Super Smash Bros.

4-5Celebrate God all day, every day. I mean, revel in him! Make it as clear as you can to all you meet that you’re on their side, working with them and not against them. Help them see that the Master is about to arrive. He could show up any minute!

6-7Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.

8-9Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.

Now read verses 6-8 again.
